Studio Acht

2020-2023

Wānaka + Remote

The Studio has been through many phases since its establishment in April 2020. I've had a wonderful team of tāngata whenua and tāngata Tiriti wāhine come and go as a result of the ever-changing environment that we exist in.

2021 saw the most growth of the studio and I was lucky enough to spend a year (before economically challenging times) developing how our remote team worked together. I was able to adapt what I learnt during my time working in agency and in-house at Trade Me, as well as pulling tools learnt through business coaching. I wanted to be able to have a solid team who could feel supported even when we all worked remotely from one another.

Systems were put in place to enable seamless work streams, streamlined project management, and open lines of communications. Personal goals aligned with overall business goals, focused monthly 1:1 meetings allowed for deeper level check-ins and weekly team meetings meant for clear transparency and opportunities to foster camaraderie.

Building a team was both my favourite and most challenging aspect of business ownership and has strengthened my people leadership and management skills ten-fold.

  • Britt is a person-first leader. She genuinely cares about your wellbeing, interests, and aspirations, and nurtures you to be able to do your best work. She shows up as her authentic self, encouraging the team to do the same and creates such a strong working bond.

  • Britt is always considerate of others opinions and needs but is also capable of making bold decisions by herself. She is great at getting you to figure out what you need to do to improve, rather than giving you all the answers without letting you do the work.

  • As a leader, Britt encouraged us to sit in the simple moments, spend time together, often deep in discussion - chatting about our visions as a collective and individually. Funnily enough, goal setting is something I’ve always found difficult, confronting perhaps. Somehow, Britt made it feel safe.

  • As a remote team, meeting kanohi ki te kanohi, face to face, at a team retreat lit a spark that held us in our entire time working together. Getting to deeply understand eachothers passions, quirks, and aspirations meant we could connect more meaningfully as a team.

  • I loved how we would moodboard and brainstorm for things we wanted to bring into reality and the kind of studio we wanted to be part of. I also enjoyed how we would check in with the team each week to realign our goals and take stock of our journeys.

  • My key takeaways from working with Britt were more personal than professional. Britt’s unwavering passion for creativity and pushing boundaries, her supportive nature and ability to hold space are just a few of her most inspiring qualities.

  • Britt allows your strength and curiosity to shine, and lifts you up. She encourages new ways of doing things, exploring what's possible and visioning what could make a difference. At the same time, she coaches on weaker areas to help you succeed. Having a strong foundation of systems means that creativity can thrive in direction, and I felt this while working at and with Studio Acht.

  • One of my key takeaways from working Britt was that when you are a kind, creative, good human then people will see that and want to invest in you and your skills. And that by doing so you can help them and their business endeavours thrive too.

    Sophia Bishop

  • Through Britt’s leadership and guidance I was able to step into a truer, sweeter version of myself. I felt more confidence in abilities and was able to acknowledge some of the ongoing barriers I had been facing (for much longer than I initially realised).

  • I still incorporate the lessons and learnings from working with Britt in my work today. Her leadership style has influenced my own, and as a new line manager, I have endeavoured to be 'more like Britt' in finding opportunities for my team to explore the possible.

  • I grew my design confidence and decision making skills immensely. I also learned a lot of key design processes, built systems and learnt more presentation skills from Britt.
